Mirror of My Heart

“Above all else, guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life!” (Proverbs 4:23) guard: (v) to watch over, or care for-to protect; watch over so as to prevent escape; maintain precious control over; furnish with a protective devise; take precautions. wellspring: a source of continual supply.

During a time of year when the world is consumed with yet another season of massive gift giveing I can’t help but be reminded of my first wake up call of guarding my heart against the superficial comforts of material love. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing superficial about a girl wanting a little token of appreciation now and again. I’m talkin’ about the “HE LOVES ME-HE LOVES ME NOTs”.

See I grew up in the midwest where holidays like “Sweetest Day”, school dances like the “Turn-about”, and of course “Homecoming” were really all about who was going to buy you what and every girl could look forward to atleast a wrist corsage and a small box of chocolates. Lucky for me, my husband also grew up in the midwest -highschool sweethearts – so in his cornfed mind this process of swooning a girl meant teddy bears the size of a potty-trained toddler, “Forrest Gump-ish” boxes of chocolate with every assortment you really didn’t know what you were gonna get. Coincidentally I still have the teddy bear and the heart shaped box top!

Anyway, my point is, I was all set up for a “HE LOVES ME” filled life of everyday random gifts, flowers arrangements of just because and a heart that leapt from the pages of Shakespeare’s personal journal.

WEEEEEELLLLLLL…We moved to the south. Needless to say, that first year was a rude awakening that NO ONE I mean not even Walmart had a display of “forget-me-nots” for sweetest day. And much to my surprise, I waited, and waited and yet not even a hint of “remember when we use to…” As the saying goes “BUT GOD”.

You ever realize that God has this way of preparing you BEFORE the storms of life, even though sometimes we fail to recognize the preparation. We started this year with a statement “You are positioned to prosper in life”. Sweetest day was my positioning to prosper in life (marriage). Sweetest day was in October, my anniversary-OCTOBER!

Go head, it’s an aaahhhh/awweee moment. I relish the idea, I bat my lashes and let my heart go pitter patter at the fact that God guarded my heart. He placed watch over it, to protect it from allowing the love of my (to-be) husband to escape. I’m not talking about the love of the gifts, I’m talking about the love of the unsacrificial giving of my husband. I could have used the lack of participation in the holiday in the south to get me to complaining, loathing the idea of missing the opporunity to give gifts. But I didn’t. Hard as it was.

Proverbs 4:20-27 reads…Give attention to my words; incline your ears to my sayings. DO NOT let it depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to all their flesh; keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it springs the issues of life. Heart is a term that includes your mind, emotions and will. The decision is made in the inner being (v21) but quickly shows up in our outer actions (Luke 4:23-25; known by our fruits) So we should make sure that we guard our hearts carefully, watching what we say (v24) what we look at (v25) or even how we look at it and what we do (v 26,27). Above all else, guard your heart…

Side bar: A woman’s countenance is often a mirror of her heart. When she abides in God’s love, her facial features tend to soften and lines become tempered. An inner peace and joy are reflected on her face. A woman’s actions and attitudes are often an indication of where her roots are planted. When a woman’s heart is rooted in peace and joy (Galatians 5:22,23) her outward countenance radiates vitality, enthusiasm, love and a deep sense of well being-something no amount of of make-up, perfume professional styling, high fashion or personal fitness program can create.

When was your last heart check? Is it guarded? Does the reflection in the mirror represent your heart?
